Courses

The education and training programmes run by the Laboratory include courses at under-graduate and post-graduate level. Practical laboratory work is carried out in the general university laboratories. Final year theses and M.Sc. projects in marine ecology are organised and supervised by the Laboratory staff. There are also doctorate students who carry out research in different meiofaunal and macrofaunal groups.

Since much of its basic research concerns the health and productivity of the marine environment, with studies focusing on the dynamics of marine ecosystems and the communities which inhabit them, students have the opportunity of being trained in interesting field work techniques.

In research covering the coastal zone, beach, intertidal and shallow shelf sampling is often carried out by hand corers. Cores are taken by hand in shallow water to a depth of 20 cms. The same procedure is carried out underwater, though it is a little more difficult to position the core and push it well into the sediments.
