The Marine Ecology Laboratory, supervised by Professor Anastasios Eleftheriou, offers an unrivalled opportunity for both Greek and foreign students to gain knowledge of, and experience in, the marine sciences. The Laboratory is open all year round, and its facilities are available for use by staff and students of the University of Crete as well as by researchers and educational groups from outside the university.

Two of the early orientations of the Laboratory were: the development of benthic studies in the Cretan and adjacent seas (Ionian, Aegean, Libyan). Special emphasis is given to meiofaunal studies, an area which was previously totally neglected in the Mediterranean.

Macrobenthic research and environmental studies are also part of the remit of the Laboratory, which has participated in multi-disciplinary programmes on the continental shelf in the Southern Aegean, as well as in the deep-sea studies in the Aegean Sea carried out by the manned submersible JAGO.
