Partners
Institute of Marine Biology of Crete
University of Hamburg
Marine Biological Laboratory

Project Objectives
To determine, in sulphide and methane-rich ecosystems
- the biological, physical and chemical characteristics
-
the role of the biota in major geochemical fluxes
- the role of chemoautotrophic and methylotrophic bacteria
- the adaptations enabling eukaryotes to live in sulphidic environments
- the relationship between methane venting, and sulphide and metal concentrations, and to relate these to the fauna distribution
- to compare the inter-relationships of symbiotic bacteria in the animals inhabitants, by comparing their nucleic acids.
